Dr. Richard Shanaman, D.D.S, P.C : Composite Restorations

Many people do not like the gray, dead look which amalgam fillings often give their teeth. Another option is composite restorations, which are tooth colored. This procedure can be accomplished in one visit, since no laboratory procedures are required. Please note the following examples.

Amalgam Color Look at the distinct difference in color, vitality, and appearance of the tooth indicated by the arrow.
Composite Color Note the change in vitality of the tooth indicated by the arrow, and then how natural and alive the tooth appears after a composite restoration is placed.
Spaces Small composite restorations are used to close the space between the two front teeth.
Chips/Discolorations The central incisors were restored in form and color.
Composite Strength As seen in this example, the amalgam filling and corner of the molar are fractured. It was replaced with a composite which appears very lifelike. The drawback is lack of strength, compared to gold or porcelain onlays.
Direct Composites The upper teeth were periodontally hopeless. The patient could not, emotionally, accept extraction. Direct composites were used to improve appearance short term.
Ceramic Restorations
Procera Crowns This lady was very unhappy with the appearance of her two front teeth. Treatment required extraction of the hopeless left central incisor, replace it with an implant and crown it and the other using two all-ceramic restorations.
